Winter’s here and it’s “that time of year”…you know… the time for sniffles, colds, flu, aches and pains. Lucky for us, nature has to hand the ingredients we need to help with all of the above ailments. Which means we can now relax and enjoy winter. Safe in the knowledge that the wonderful ‘Miss Winter’ has provided everything we need to get through the cold months ahead. Here are my top 3 winter cold remedies:
My Top 3 Winter Cold Remedies
No 1. Basic Cold & Flu Tea

No. 2 Herbal Steam & Tea
Steam is an old-fashioned remedy for colds, coughs and congestion. Which makes it the ideal carrier for herbs and essential oils. What you need to do is add a generous handful of fresh Yarrow and Ground Ivy to a bowl of boiled water. Leave it to steep for 5 mins then cover your head and the bowl with a towel. Then chill out, relax and inhale the steam for a few minutes. Of course, you could also make a tea, just add lemon and honey to enhance the cold busting properties. Winter cold? What winter cold?😉
It’s highly likely that this ‘weed’ (the dark green one in the pic) is growing in your garden right now. That is of course, if you’re not a keen gardener. ‘Creeping Charlie’, as gardeners call it, is the bane of their lives. And they will do everything they can to get rid of it!
Ground Ivy is a member of the mint family and if you crush a leaf between your fingers you will catch the scent of mint. Gather the leaves, flowers and stems. (You could use Peppermint if you can’t find any Ground Ivy) Peppermint is another ‘staple’ ingredient for winter cold remedies. Click on the link in the heading for more information.
This wild herb is growing everywhere here in Scotland and you’ll find it’s prolific throughout the UK all year long . When picking it, remember to avoid any growing on roadside verges. These will be contaminated and of no use to you. Incidentally, I would label this particular herb as a key ingredient in all winter cold remedies. No 3. Comfrey Brew
The chances are that you pull this plant out of your own garden, believing it’s a weed. I use the roots to make tea, along with Lemon Balm, Peppermint and Yarrow. You’ll find these are a great combination of herbs for coughs and congestion, making it an ideal remedy for your winter cold. Dry the roots, along with the other herbs (or use fresh). Add a teaspoon of the mixed herbs per cup to boiling water, leave to steep for 5-10 mins. Strain then enjoy! Click on the link in the heading for more information.
To Sum Up
On Saturday (8th Dec), Caber and I were out picking wild herbs and plants to use in a couple of recipes I have planned over Christmas. I’ve also been busy air drying a fair amount of them to make into the above tea concoctions to add to my Christmas hampers. Personally, I find them easier to drink if I add a slice of lemon and a piece of ginger. I occasionally add a drop of honey as well. Another tip I can share with you is to air dry your orange peels, don’t throw them out! You can then add small cuttings of the peel to your dry ingredients. Not only does it taste nice but it’s also antibacterial, among other things!
